145. How to Deal with Gossip at Work with Prina Shah

In this episode, Prina Shah dives into the topic of office gossip—what it is, how it harms workplace culture, and most importantly, how to manage it. Prina shares two powerful quotes to frame the conversation: "Those who gossip to you, gossip about you" and "Loose lips sink ships." She highlights why gossip can be detrimental and provides a three-step framework to evaluate whether or not you should engage in a conversation that may be gossip:

  1. Is it true?
  2. Would you say this to the person directly?
  3. Is it beneficial for you to know this information?

Prina also differentiates between gossip and debriefing, encouraging listeners to reflect on whether their workplace conversations are helpful and constructive or harmful and toxic. This episode is packed with practical insights to help you steer clear of gossip and maintain a healthier, more positive work environment.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gossip erodes trust and damages workplace culture.
  • Evaluate conversations using Prina’s three-step framework.
  • Understand the difference between debriefing (a healthy communication practice) and gossiping.

The gossip. What is the gos? It's an issue, it's a big, big issue for workplaces and workplace cultures. Now I've got a couple of quotes for you which I love. So, quote number one those who gossip to you gossip about you. Think about it. People who gossip generally tend to be untrustworthy, generally speaking. That's quote number one. Quote number two is loose lips sink sips. Loose lips sink ships. There you go, I said it right the second time. And that's a fact that when you gossip, it has a detrimental effect as well. And why is it that it's a potentially detrimental effect? That's because of the fact that you don't know whether the gossip is true, whether whoever is gossiping to you would tell the person that they're gossiping about the same thing as well, and the gossip. That's being said, is it of benefit to you? Is it of benefit to anyone else? Why should you know about it? So those are the three criteria I ask when people gossip to me. Is it true? First off, do you know if this is true? If it's complete BS, I don't want to know about it. Is it something that you would tell obviously me, but the person that you're talking about as well? Would you tell them the same thing? And then number three, is it of benefit to me to know this information? Consider that when you gossip at work. The other thing, as well, I'm very mindful that not all workplaces have great cultures. And yes, do we we do need to talk with each other? But there's a clear difference between gossiping and debriefing, and know the difference between that. There's a negative connotation to gossiping, and debriefing is a healthy aspect of work and life that we all need to do. So are you debriefing or are you gossiping? And remember the three elements is it factual? Is it something that this person would tell the person that they're talking about? And number three, is it of benefit to me? That's how you deal with gossip at work. How good was that episode? If you liked it, be sure to share it with a couple of other people. Also in the show notes are details about my newsletter.
